CeBIT: Tatung

Entertainment PCs and portable media players steal the show from servers

Joachim Kaufmann, ZDNet Germany, 16.03.2005

Consumer electronics took the spotlight at the Tatung booth at CeBIT this week. Entertainment PCs, hard drive video recorders and portable media players dominated the scene.

Among other things, a 3.4GHz Pentium entertainment PC was on display. The machine has the design of a hi-fi component, with 512MB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, DVD burner and integrated 7.1 channel surround sound. Graphics are handled by an ATI Radeon 300 graphics chipset, and the PC has a built-in dual-TV tuner. It is bundled with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Separately, a hard drive video recorder was also on display. The PVR-1000 contains a Celeron processor, Windows CE operating system, 80GB hard drive, 128 MB RAM and a TV tuner. In addition to recording TV programmes, this device is also able to surf the Internet.

And the Elio, with its 2.2-inch colour display, represents Tatung's contribution to the portable media player market. The player has a 20GB hard drive and can handle MP3, WMA and WAV files as well as JPEGs, making it a portable photo player. Data is transferred from the computer via USB2.0. The Elio measures 11.3 x 7.3 x 1.9 cm (4.5 x 3 x .75 in.).
