Digital Living

CeBIT highlights for the living room

People looking for digital home solutions should go to Hanover where companies are presenting their latest developments.

Kai Schmerer, 09.03.2005

At CeBIT 2005 focus of attention is on products for the digital home. Above all manufacturers are presenting new developments in the field of large format displays. Most companies are gathered in halls 1 and 2. HDTV capable devices are very much the focus of attention. The transmission of the 2006 football World Cup in this format could lead to a boom in this type of technology.

A new feature of the displays is a digital interface. The so-called HDMI interface (High Definition Multimedia Interface) present in the top models provides a perfect transmission of the signal. Unlike with RGB there is no loss of picture quality. HDMI is compatible with the DVI specification, but also brings further additional functions. Among other things the HDCP (High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) encoding is supported and therefore meets the demands of the film industry where transmissions with digital contents cannot be transmitted in a decoded form.

Samsung plasma screen
The life span of new plasma TVs is now up to 60,000 hours at 50 per cent brightness, which is a vast improvement on the first generation devices. Samsung, in hall 21 booth B41, is presenting the world's largest plasma screen with a diagonal screen measurement of almost 2.6 metres.

Sharp Aquos
Sharp, in hall 1 booth number 7A2, is presenting new LCD TVs from their Aquos product range that have an integrated DVB-T-Tuner and a DVI input.

Trade fair tips:

  • NEC, hall 2 B10
  • Sony, hall 2 C02
  • Samsung, hall 21 B41
  • Sharp, hall 2 B34
  • Toshiba, hall 1 5E2
