Während Intel die Entwicklung des P4 mit 4 GHz gestoppt hat, liefert AMD den Athlon 64 4000+ aus. Allerdings ist der Chip nicht höher getaktet als der 3800+. Rechtfertigt der größere L2-Cache die höhere Leistungseinstufung?
So unterschiedlich können Firmenstrategien sein. Während Intel am Freitag offiziell den Pentium 4 mit 4 GHz abgekündigt hat, stellt AMD am heutigen Dienstag den Athlon 64 4000+ (2,4 GHz) vor.
Auch im Highend-Segment gibt es einen neuen Chip: Der Athlon 64 FX-55 arbeitet mit 2,6 GHz und ist AMDs leistungsfähigster PC-Prozessor. Diese Leistung lässt sich AMD mit 827 Dollar fürstlich entlohnen. Der Desktop-Chip 4000+ ist mit 729 Dollar auch nicht gerade günstig. Beide Prozessoren sind für die Sockel-939-Plattform vorgsehen. Für ältere Mainboards mit Sockel 754 plant AMD keine leistungsfähigeren Chips mehr.
Neu ist ebenfalls, dass AMD den Preis für das bisherige Spitzenmodell 3800+ mit der Vorstellung des 4000+ nicht senkt. Dieser kostet nach wie vor 643 Dollar. Dafür fallen jedoch die Preise für alle anderen Athlon 64-Modelle. Die Modelle 3500+ und 3400+ verbilligen sich immerhin um 17 Prozent.
